Colombia’s Digital Technology Growing Exponentially

Considering that Colombia has a population of 51.07 million, the fact that there are some 34.73 million internet users in Colombia in 2021, it is a significant number of internet users. The number of internet users in Colombia increased by 1.3 million (+4.0%) between 2020 and 2021.

Colombia’s telecom infrastructure has improved through a government program of competition to upgrade services based on LTE and 5G, focusing on infrastructure in small urban centers and rural areas; national ICT Plan increased broadband and fiber connectivity; operators testing 5G and completed 20k terrestrial cable connecting 80% of the country; benefiting due to access to commercial submarine cable (2021).

Colombia is the third country where users remain connected to the internet, with 10 hours and 07 minutes in total. At the opposite end is Japan, where on average users use the internet for only 4 hours and 25 minutes a day. The world average is 6 hours and 54 minutes.

Already adept and connected, Colombians have adopted the use of mobile banking and internet banking. It practically tripled in quarantine, with increases of 192% and 187% respectively in this type of transactions. As a result, about two-thirds of the money traded in the financial system was made through digital channels.

Social media statistics for Colombia

The number of social media users in Colombia increased by 4.0 million (+11%) between 2020 and 2021, according to government statistics.

Many people have more than one mobile connection, so figures for mobile connection may exceed 100% of the total population.

Digital Education for Millions of Colombians

In Colombia, for more than ten years an action plan has been implemented with, according to the Ministry of Information Technologies and Communications, MinTic, has been taught to more than 13 million people the correct navigation in safe digital environments.

The idea is that Colombians of all ages learn through virtual and face-to-face work different strategies to recognize risks on the web, as well as the correct way of living together “and exercising digital activism.” Source: INFOBAE.

The president of the National Association of Colombian Entrepreneurs (Andi), Bruce Mac Master, pointed out that for Colombia to be a competitive ecosystem, investment in digital transformation and technology must be increased.

Likewise, he explained that the country also needs to generate regulatory flexibility mechanisms, increase research and innovation capacities, improve tax incentives, promote educational relevance, strengthen the environment for entrepreneurship and measure smart industry indexes”.

Technology Success in the Country

The technology sector is one of the fastest growing in the country and, in the future, it promises to be a major milestone in the economy. Only this sector had significant participation in the ranking of the 1,000 largest companies in the country, presented in the Superintendency of Companies annual report. There, for example, the IT business had revenues of $17.1 billion last year, representing 2.4% of the total of the country’s economy.
